Rhetorical Terms Lists for A.P. English Language.
Please keep these lists separate. You will be tested at the beginning of the semester by list number.
For the rhetorical terms flashcards, you are to do three things on the back of each flashcard:
1) The official definition. Some definitions are longer than others. You are only required to copy the actual definition, which may run between 1-3 sentences. The additional details are for clarification purposes. If they help you understand the term, then by all means you should copy what you need.
2) A brief definition in your own words. This rephrasing of the definition should be simple and easy to understand. It should be something that can easily be remembered by you. You will have multiple quizzes (written and oral) throughout the year on these words, so being able to understand the meaning of these terms is important.
3) An example or easy to understand explanation of how the term functions. The list of terms includes some easy to understand examples and some longer explanations that are meant to help you understand how the term actually functions. You are required to include an example or an explanation. The choice is up to you. If what is on the rhetorical terms list(s) does not help you, please check online sources. You are more than welcome to find an example or explanation that is easier for you to understand. You don’t have to cite the source.

Current Issues Project
"Nonfiction, visual culture, argument- these three essential components of reading and writing converge in documentary film, making it an ideal way to study the fundamentals of rhetoric. What, after all is a documentary except someone’s argument that the audience should accept this viewpoint, take this action, make this commitment, understand the rightness/wrongness of this policy, etc? To achieve this purpose, the filmmaker must understand the audience and appropriate appeals- i.e., the rhetorical situation." (R. Shea).
During the summer, you will be asked to select a documentary that presents an argument on a topic of your choice. You will only be asked to submit an analysis review of the documentary.
Choosing the Documentary:
Below is a list of titles that are options for this project. Select one documentary, get your parent’s permission, and then complete the Documentary Film Analysis handout. Many of these titles are available from public libraries or through online video streaming sources such as Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, or iTunes. Make sure you are viewing a documentary, and not a fictional film with the same name.
You MUST have parent/guardian approval before viewing the documentary. Documentaries may or may not be rated due to the category they fall under, but this does not mean the documentary will be free of graphic, violent, or inappropriate images. Make sure your parent/guardian is clear about why you are watching this documentary. You can access information on the documentary at IMDB.com. They can offer rating information, a synopsis, and in most cases a trailer of the film. Your parent/guardian will need to sign their consent form at the bottom stating that you have permission to view the film you choose.
**If you choose a documentary not on this list, please make sure to get approval from me first.
Parents: You can access information on the documentary at IMDB.com. The website can offer rating information, a synopsis, and in most cases a trailer of the film. If you have questions, feel free to email me at [email protected].
Once you have chosen a documentary, you will view the film and complete the Documentary Film Analysis worksheet.
This worksheet, along with the permission slip, will be due on the first day of class.
